On 18 August, ArwaMaqbul, 5th year student at An-Najah’s the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences concluded her 4-week training at the Colorectal Department at Warrington and Halton Hospitals in Manchester, United Kingdom.

At the end of the training, Arwa received an excellent evaluation from her supervisor Dr. AymanAbdelraziq, Colorectal surgeon in both hospitals.Dr. Abdelraziq said“Arwa has proven to be a hardworking student during the training and set a model for dedication to life and science, in her optimism and seeking of progress and self-development.” He added that,“her academic level is comparable to that of British graduate students.”

Dr. Abdelraziqcontinued saying, “during her training with the hospital’s medical team, everyone admired her manners, scientific abilities, clinical and operational skills in the operation room, and we are very pleased to have such competent Palestinian students, like Arwa, who one day will become an innovator in the field”.

On the same context, Arwa says that this training comes as part of An-Najah’s Faculty of Medicine’s teaching philosophy, as all medical students are required to do 4 weeks of training in general surgery or any of its sub-specialties in a hospital of their choice within the course of “Elective surgical specializations”. Students usually write to the hospitals or universities they are interested in doing their training in, or get involved in the training programmes offered by the International Federation of Medical Students' Associations for students of medicine around the world.

Arwa describes her experience as a very fruitful one, and adds that“I received operation room training, and participated in several operations that are not usually conducted in Palestine, in addition to inspecting patients in external clinics in the hospitals and collecting necessary   medical data, as well as conducting clinical tests and compiling files with the necessary recommendations under the supervision of the specilalised doctor, in addition to several other tasks.”

Arwa says that the experience was not only beneficial on an academic level, but also on a personal level, as that was her first time out of the country on her own, and it made her gain a lot of self-confidence and independence and taught her essential life skills, that will be very helpful for her in the future.
