On Wednesday 27 November 2013 Dr. Jawad Fatayer, the Deputy President for Graduate Affairs, hosted the American Entrepreneur Zuhri Elahyan in a well attended seminar discussing sustainable development through entrepreneurship and international youth cooperation. Dr. Fatayer, Mr. Jawad Abu Awn, the Executive President of the Palestine Sustainable Development project (PSD) and a number of academics and University students attended the meeting.

Dr. Fatayer welcomed the guests to the meeting, held at the Korean Institute Hall, New Campus, and praised the distinguished partnership with the PSD Foundation. He went on to address the role of entrepreneurship, stating that: “self-esteem is very important in managing any private project, and our community today is in need of a pioneering youth to change the status-quo, and help people. The world needs creativity, and occupation should be the reason so that we aspire to become more creative and challenge any obstacles.”

He also stated that entrepreneurship exists in every life aspect, and expressed his deepest belief in the students at An-Najah and their abilities to create and excel. An excellence he hoped was being fostered through the projects run by the Graduate Affairs Office, which is looking at students personal capacities, and developing their competitiveness in the labour market.

Mr Abu Awn had high praise for the University, and other Palestinian universities, on the success of their cooperation programs. He attributed their partnerships with the Foundation with the realization of successful youth creativity and entrepreneurship at the University.

In the same context, Mrs Elahyan expressed her positive impression of An-Najah and its students, stating how happy she was to be in Palestine. Furthermore, when talking about her work and academic career she noted the importance of the next generation: “the future needs the pioneers who care the most about their community and produce creative ideas that serve them and their community.”

She also pointed out that her visit is an educational one, and that she is proud to hear the Palestinian youth creative ideas, assuring that future is in the hands of the promising youth.

Mrs Elahyan went on to answer questions and hear directly from students through “The Youth Deserves” programme. Students were also given the opportunity to present their sustainable ideas to Mrs Elahyan. Student Ismat Tuffaha presented the “Plumeria”, which is based on developing organic and natural Palestinian food. While Haydar Al-Safadi presented his project “Laptop Bag”, that uses solar energy to charge a laptop and other technologies.
