The Integrity Committee for the Best Service in Nablus, in co-operation with the Municipality of Nablus, Partners for Sustainable Development, and the Rafidia Flower Association, organised a voluntary day last weekend. Work completed included flower planting and cleaning at a number of public sites in the City and was carried out by one hundred and fifty volunteers from the University. The campaign included work in the Sama Nablus and Jamal Abdel Nasser Parks, on the grounds of the University's New Campus, and in Rafidia's Old Town. Mr. Bilal Salameh, co-ordinator of the Committee in Nablus, spoke to the volunteers, giving them an explanation of the objectives of the Integrity Committee and the role it plays in promoting transparency and honesty, with support and funding from TIRI and the British Agency for International Cooperation. The Committee began activities in Nablus by distributing questionnaires to gauge the opinion of citizens of their municipal infrastructure. The Committee will then build on the results in order to ensure the fairness and transparency of public services to residents of the Municipality. Mr. Salameh told the volunteers that the Integrity Commission was established as a result of the project “Integrity for the Poor,” a program which receives support from the Applied Research Institute of Jerusalem, and aims to empower local bodies to provide essential services to all citizens in a fair and transparent manner. He called upon Mr. Iyad Halak, the co-ordinator of voluntary work at the Community Service Centre, to stress the importance of volunteer activities in confirming the values of impartiality and fairness in community work. The volunteers met in the gardens before beginning the day of work to read over leaflets that explain the concepts related to the “Integrity for the Poor” project and to discuss their application.
